I am not sure why I am moved to put up a page about dark horse Republican Presidential candidate Michael J. Meehan. Perhaps it was the name: when I was a little boy in South Bend, Indiana, I spent a lot of time with a wonderful family named Meehan. Michael, it turns out when you read his campaign bio, is not one of the South Bend Meehans, although he looks familiar and is the right age.
He has a realistic goal: to finish fifth in the New Hampshire primary. He seems like a fairly average dark horse: his campaign consists of the fact that he is not a politician and the fact that he has come up with a few bullet points. In real life, he is literally a "rent-seeker": he is a professional landlord.
One of his more interesting ideas is something I have agitated against: a federal constitutional convention. Article V of the US Constitution outlines a procedure which has never been used and which I think would be very dangerous. He says this would be a "CONVENTION of the PEOPLE." Actually, it would just be a group of politicians, no better and no worse than the Congress— only, this group of politicians would be making up their own rules.
Be that as it may, here are Meehan's bullet points:
Congress will serve and leave— when service is over, there will be no retirement & no benefits.
A balanced budget amendment will be passed [editorial note: by a constitutional convention if Congress doesn't pass one], ensuring a complete budget balance within four years.
Serious reform will be instituted in banking, Wall Street, welfare, etc. Those who caused our current economic disaster will be held accountable.
Income tax will be restructured— building consensus to a fair tax plan. The largest portion of taxes will be kept in the cities and counties.

(Like most Republicans, Meehan believes that even a short video needs a long introduction. These videos each take 30 seconds to get going— but at least this time there is no annoying theme music.)
