Jenna Bush Reports Live from Yellowstone— & like Old Faithful, she blows
Commentary by Tim Horrigan; July 1, 2010; revised December 22. 2010
In June 2010, the NBC Today Show sent Jenna Bush Hager out into the field to report on our nation's national parks. Her first reports from Yellowstone were not Peabody-Award calibre, if you catch my drift.
Chelsea Handler and The Young Turks both singled her out for ridicule on June 29, 2010. The video of Handler's commentary was taken down after a while, but the Young Turks lefts theirs up.
Handler gave much better snark, and I suppose she picked up a bigger gaffe. In Handler's segment, Jenna initially says Yellowstone is the size of "Delaware and Idaho put together" when she was just a few miles from the Idaho state line. Idaho is in fact the 14th-largest state in the union and it is about 25 times the size of the park. Jenna apparently meant to say “Delaware and Rhode Island.”
But the Young Turks picked up on a funnier gaffe. When asked a simple question about the temperature (which was probably in the low 40s Fahrenheit), she launches into a Palinesque stream of consciousness:
Nat; Matt and Natalie? Uh-huh. Oh, it's pretty cold.... THE GLOVES! Got the gloves and the fleece, haha! And it's— and, uh-huh, the sun is coming up, so things could be worse. Hahahaha. Y'all could come and enjoy some of the cool.
