Send Lindsay Lohan a Care Package!

Commentary by Timothy Horrigan; July 23, 2010

This video by Cliff Baldridge amused me for some reason, even though the cinematography (a shaky handheld shot of an iPhone) was lame. I am doing my bit to make it "mega viral".

The gist of the video is that you can send Lindsay Lohan (or any other Hollywood star) a care package while she is in jail. The LA County Sheriff's department has set up a web site – LASDpackages.com – where you can order items which she will receive through the jail commissary. Her inmate number is: 2409752. The jail commissaries in Los Angeles County are run by a contractor, Keefe Commissary Network , who run similar commissaries nationwide. The County gets a cut of the action, so the care package will help defray the cost of running the jail.

There are 9 different gift packs available: 8 snack food assortments and 1 phone card. The phone card is probably the most useful one: Lindsay only weighs 118 pounds, so she's presumably not a big eater.

I happen to be a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, which means I am also a member of my county's legislative body, the Strafford County Convention. I am on the county revenue committee which deals with amongst other things the income from our jail (which covers much of the huge cost of running the facility.) We don't contract through Keefe, but we do make a profit from the commissary. Third parties can't order packages online, but friends and family can donate to the prisoner's account. He or she can then order items from the prison phone system: the classic Nike sneakers are especially popular— and the county administrator was wearing a pair to our last meeting.
