Every Presidential election cycle, a few weeks before the New Hampshire Primary, the New Hampshire Institute of Politics (which is part of Saint Anselm College) holds a “Lesser Known Presidential Candidates” forum. The 2008 forum was held on December 13, 2007, in advance of the January 8, 2008 primary.
The highest fringe Republican vote-getter in 2008 was Cornelius Edward O'Connor (who is running in 2012 as a Democrat) who got 46 votes. He finished only 17 behind a mainstream candidate, Congressman Tom Tancredo. The highest fringe Democrat was Richard Edward Caligiuri, who got 253 votes, 48 more than U.S. Senator Chris Dodd (who dropped out of the race on January 7, 2008, after a poor showing in the Iowa caucuses.)
